The Hot and oh-so Cheesy Legend of the Chicago Pizzahead™
SOME LEGENDS ARE BAKED.
I was born in Chicago in 1970. Our family moved to Saint Joseph, Michigan just across the lake when I was very young, but some of my earliest, tastiest memories were inside Chicago-Style Deep Dish Pizza Parlors.
Loving both the Cubs and the White Sox as a kid (I didn’t know you had to choose one or the other), watching my Dad’s eyes glow with pride when he talked about Walter Payton (and meeting him) in the tough times of the 70s, Steve Dahl’s Disco Demolition DMZ (yes, it STILL sucks), visiting the Merchandise Mart & McCormick place as a son of retailers and watching the Blues Brothers movie over and over highlighted some of my favorite memories with my family.
Playing football from 4th grade all the way through 12th grade, the Bears 85 dream season landed smack dab in the middle of my High School football career. I was even part of “The Maize & Bruise Brothers” – a poster recreation homage to the linemen on that team, especially “Mongo”.
I can remember the first time visiting a Chicago Pizza Parlor with my parents as a little kid. Although it was probably spoon-fed to me the first time I could ever eat solid food, the memories of the clatter of the pans, the steamy heat, the smell of carmelizing dough and thick, hot, melted cheese was almost as amazing as visiting “Great America”, or even the indoor Amazement-Park miracle of “Old Chicago” (if you can remember that).
Living & working in advertising in Chicago in the Music / Restaurant / Entertainment industry after college Clark & Diversey was such a cool way to spend my formative years right out of school. Many nights were filled with Chicago-Style Deep Dish Pizza followed up by a (half) pint of Ben & Jerry’s, New York Super Fudge Chunk ice cream. Let’s just say I was expanding my Big Shoulders.
Somewhat abruptly after a particularly snowy winter, I followed my love, Kristen, out to San Francisco. We got married and had two young girls, and in the process, I drifted a little too far away from the Deep-Dish goodness that I often craved.
A national brand opened up a Chicago-Style pizzeria on the West Coast, but it never really compared to the REAL thing. Later on, I actually made it a point to learn how to make it myself because I couldn’t get it (2,000 miles away was a bit far for delivery).
Now, let’s tie this all into Chicago sports…
Dave Kingman and Greg “THE BULL” Luzinski were epic icons to me as a kid. Also, living in Chicago for a couple of the Bulls World Championships was simply amazing. I remember going to that big sports store near my office in The Excalibur, I think on Ohio street, and seeing Nike “Jordans” for the first time. Also, being a 15 year-old when Da Bears won da Super Bowl was pretty much the pinnacle of my sports fan career. I thought of changing my name to Swerski after that.
You know the Green Bay cheesehead hat? Lame.
I remember seeing the Green Bay cheeseheads and thinking, “Look at those idiots. Not only are they lame-ass Green Bay fans – look at that thing on their heads.” As you know, the 2025 season inspired someone to design and produce the Cheese Grater hat. They actually help produce OUR hats!
I loved seeing the Cheese Grater Hat, but it was just a response to our most hated rival. Sitting there thinking about it that fall, something hit me. What if we had a hat that had nothing to do with Green Bay? What if we had a hat that wasn’t tied to just football? What if we had a hat that was a true celebration of the joy & character that embodies the City of Chicago, regardless of place or time?
Ladies and gentlemen, we give you the Chicago Pizzahead™
Everyone who’s ever seen one (and especially tried one on) bursts out a big laugh, a huge smile, and feels a warm feeling inside, just like a real slice of Chicago-Style Deep Dish Pizza.
And just like the real thing, every hat is made BY HAND right here in the USA with love for and pride in the City of Chicago and ALL of Chicagoland.
